Students looking to become professionals in the field of behavioral sciences have a number of educational options for earning counseling degrees. Accredited schools and colleges can provide students with the training they need to pursue a career in this exciting field. Educational training programs allow students to enroll in both part time and full time degree programs. Students can obtain a bachelors, masters, or doctorates degree in the field of counseling.

A bachelor's degree in counseling can be obtained through various schools and colleges. A degree at this level of training may take up to four years for completion. There are a number of things students should know prior to enrolling in an educational program at this level of study. Obtainable degrees at this level of training include:
  • Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)
  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.)

Possible coursework may include the study of psychology, sociology, education and social work. Prospective careers for students looking to obtain a bachelors degree include substance abuse counselors, social workers, community counselors or mental health counselors. With an accredited bachelors degree students can find employment or further their education with a masters.

Students can enroll in a master's degree program in the field of counseling through a number of accredited schools and colleges. A master's degree in this field can take students around two years to obtain. Students should ensure that they complete research on the degree before enrolling. Degrees available at this level of study are:
  • Master of Arts (M.A.)
  • Master of Science (M.S.)
  • Master of Education (M.Ed.)

Curriculum followed with a master's degree program includes courses in child development, intervention methods, ethics and cognitive science. The training at this level of study opens doors for a career as a psychiatrist, marriage and family counselor, clinical psychologist or psychoanalyst. An accredited master's degree will provide student with the knowledge and skills to enter into the career they desire or pursue a doctorates degree.

Doctorate level degrees can be earned by enrolling in an accredited school or college. Students can earn a doctorates degree with an additional four years of study. There are various things students should know before enrolling. Students can earn several degrees at this level of study:
  • PhD
  • Psy. D.

With doctorates level degree training students will study human services, clinical psychology, human relationships, research and education. Graduates can pursue a number of professional careers as counseling psychologists, forensic psychologists, school guidance counselors or teachers. Students looking to gain the education needed to enter counseling at this level will be prepared for the career of their dreams. Students can find employment that fits their individual career goals.

Gaining an accredited counseling degree will allow students to work helping other people. There are various programs that are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) in order to provide students with the best quality education possible.
